Buried gold, pirate treasure, ancient artifacts... The lure of "easy" riches often carries a dangerously high price. Bill Sinclair, New York antiques dealer specializes in finding unusual items for upscale decorators and occasionally for wealthy collectors more interested in acquiring artifacts than knowing where they came from. Stella Duchene, self-reinvented from bright, savvy New York design student into an upscale Paris Designer only the very wealthy can afford, enters the dangerous world of stolen antiquities to satisfy her appetite for excitement and money.

Both rank among the elite of Black Market Antiquity dealers but have very different operating styles. Stella considers Bill too honest, too nice in a business of thieves, and Bill laments the fact that Stella frequently allows greed to impair her judgment. The two have an on-again, off-again personal relationship that depends on whether they team up for mutual benefit or their paths collide as they try to outwit both the good and the bad guys chasing them.

When Bill receives an 18th Dynasty vase from a trusted Middle Eastern contact, his fascination with the piece draws him into a hunt for the jewelry Queen Nefertiti is shown wearing in the vase’s bas relief. It also brings a detective from the Special Crimes Theft of Art Objects from Museums and Galleries, to his door.

In London, Stella's associate and mentor, Casper, asks her to pick up and deliver a silver medallion to a meeting place he is arranging. Reluctant because of the tightened security she encountered on her last delivery, she agrees and promises to return for the coin that night. When she does, Casper is dead, and the police arrive suddenly. She makes a daring escape with the medallion—and the killer not far behind her. When there's a second murder, Stella buys herself murder insurance by sending the coin to the one person she can trust and the killer can't find—Bill.

When odd gifts begin arriving, Bill and friend computer wiz, Larry figure out the wild scheme Stella has devised, Then, unable to stop her, they become part of the chase that follows.

In these days of gloomy news and predictions about the economy, Artful Misdirection is the perfect pick-me-up for readers who enjoy intrigue, suspense and heart.

Artful Misdirection - edition by C. D. Ledbetter, M. R. Henderson. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

If you've ever been thrilled by the escapades of "gentleman thieves" like Thomas Crown or Arsène Lupin, or day-dreamed of an opportunity that is almost-but-not-quite too good to be true, then Artful Misdirection will be your flute of bubbly.

When respectable and normally-honest NY antique dealer Bill St. Clair receives an alabaster vase with a bas relief of Queen Nefertiti making an offering to the gods, he also gets a visit from a Manhattan Special Forces agent investigating a Museums and Galleries Theft. The vase filled with humble daffodils sitting on St. Clair's dining room table will not escape the notice of readers with an eye for Hitchcockian irony. The detective's visit sets Bill to thinking What if his reliable source sent him a vase that might be worth a little bit more than he thought? Or much, much more?

New Yorker Stella Duchene, now established in Paris as an interior designer to the rich-and-famous, has a taste for excitement and riches that justifies her delivering black-market artefacts to private collectors around the world. Returning from a NY delivery, she routes through London to help out her mentor on a local job. He turns up dead, but Stella resourcefully rescues the objet d'art, only a step ahead of someone who wants it as much as she does.

Henderson and Ledbetter twist and weave the two stories into a grand finale of quasi-virtue versus greed with the pace and character insight that make the reader like these folk enough to invite them for lunch -- and count the silverware before they leave.
What a good story ,it kept interest and had a delightful and what a unusual ending.I will tell my friends about this book.
What a web has been woven in this book. A fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable book to read. This book exceeded my expectations.
I just never could really get started on this book. I went back to it several times between other reads. Perhaps it is the genera. My imagination imagined the characters as dusty as the artifacts in the story. Just slow and dull to me.
This was a story about black market antiquities of Egypt and the people after them. Some are good guys and others are murderers and unscrupulous people who will do anything for this one particular coin of Cleopatra. This was a good story-line and well-developed characters. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who likes this type of book.
If you like adventures and mystery and don't want to get bogged down with unnecessary details, this books is for you! It is easy reading, seems to flow magically, and very enticing. Once you start reading you do not want to put it down until you find out what happened. Oh, I forgot--you have to come up with your own ending. If you are looking for an entertaining book to read in a matter of days vs. weeks, this book is for you!

I found this book very engaging. Egyptology and suspense are two of my favorite things. They go together well here. It was hard to put down.
I found this book to be interesting enough to stay up late to finish it, however, the ending kind of left me feeling like 'but, what happened then?' I would have liked reading about more mystery/history attached to the objects and I would have liked to see more of a struggle to gain all the pieces of the Cleopatra jewelry. It was all just a bit too easy. The last thing that bothered me was as the book went on there seemed to be more 'language' inserted. I'll admit that it would probably not bother most people but it does affect how I feel about a book. I would, however, still read a sequel if there is one.
