The world is dying. The ones who remain have survived wars, famine, the worst plague in history, and now they must contend with widespread infertility. Anya of Terismark is one of the rare ones who is still capable of bearing children - a Carrier. Her high street value makes her a priceless commodity to slavers, smugglers, and scientific facilities. Following a harrowing ordeal that left her with half an arm on one side, she finds herself trapped inside a medical haven for Carriers, a safeguard against the horrors of the post-plague wastelands. Her first day at the Facility introduces her to a new world filled with technology and indoctrination, yet all is still not as it seems.

The Facility Everwind Subchapter Book 1 eBook Janden Hale

This short story has an intriguing premise, and Mr. Hale's world is quite well-realized. His strength is definitely in worldbuilding, and I'd be interested in reading more of his work. There's also lots of well-done imagery in the descriptions (though one or two word pictures don't quite match up with what they're describing).

The Facility is about Anya, a one-armed pregnant girl waking up in the titular facility and suspecting it's not all it's cracked up to be. I'm not usually a fan of extremely gritty science fiction or fantasy, but the story does well enough despite my personal tastes. With that said, there are a few typos and instances of the prose switching between present and past tense. The omniscient point of view is a little jarring, and your enjoyment may depend on how comfortable you are when we're hopping into and out of characters' heads.

Of greater concern was the fact that Anya is rarely an active protagonist. She does something once in a while, but not quite enough to carry the story forward. Mostly she goes through the motions and looks at everything suspiciously. When she finally decides to do something important at the tale's end, it kind of feels like a cheat and unnecessarily final. She had potential, but more of it could be realized with some elbow grease on her part.

Overall, the story is a testament to Janden Hale's ability to build a world that you can believe is real, a harsh and punishing world with this superficially pleasant facility as the cynical eye of the storm. But I do hope that the storytelling and character development will prove stronger in future volumes.

The Facility Everwind Subchapter Book 1 eBook Janden Hale Reviews

A safe haven that is, in all, alarming, confronting, confusing, brainwashing and ultimately surprising. Excellent premise, brilliant delivery, fits superbly and oh so subtly with the following subchapter "Legion of Liberty". Adored the twist! Janden, I applaud you.
All of the Everwind subchapters are a refreshing take on the apocalyptic future and The Facility is no different. Hale's writing is raw, powerful and leaves you wanting more. This (as well as the other Everwind chapters) are a must read for anyone looking for a great book. I am always waiting anxiously for the next installment.
I am thoroughly enjoying the writing style and interesting story line of this book; kudos. Looking forward to the reading the series. The bonus, is getting a glimpse into the psyche of this super cool author.
I got this copy for free I think, Once I started reading, it was hard to stop. I wanted to know what would happen next and where the whole story was going. I think the stories are well written and very intriguing. It held my attention. I would recommend these books.
The concept is great, and while I wondered if it would feel too much like Children of Men, I was pleasantly surprised at the fresh take Mr. Hale took with the premise. It's fun, entertaining and smart. I was particularly amused by the writing style, which differs from the third person/past tense kind I'm used to.

All in all, I was surprised and had fun with it. The ending may upset some, but I personally enjoyed it. I'm planning to get into the next one very soon, you should too.
Is it a place of comfort and care or a place where pregnant women are kept for a devious purpose? That is the question that looms largely in this first subchapter to Everwind. It is a world and a place of destruction and grimness where everyone is in survival mode. A fascinating story this is- a beginning to a tantalizing tale that will capture your imagination and keep you questioning it. Very descriptive and creatively written, it is a story unlike any you have ever read. I enjoyed it and look forward to future subchapters.
This is a world ravaged by famine, infertility, and disease. Enter Anya, a Carrier - one of the rare fertile humans left on the entire planet, awakes in the Facility. A place where it's inhabitants, other Carriers, see as paradise. A mouse trap heaven away from the destruction and danger of the outside world. However, things are not what they seem - there are secrets in the shadows, and recalibrating of the human psyche of these Carriers are at the forefront in what seems to be an even more dangerous place than the ill fated world beyond the doors.

There are times when Hale's prose is a little bit clunky, when his words are stuttered, but the potential of his expanding universe are undeniable, and this novella salivates the mind for further installments [see Legion of Liberty (subchapter 2), and Snowleaf (subchapter 3)]

Highly recommended if you enjoy reading dark sci-fi/fantasy and/or post-apocalyptic works.
