I have trouble rating this book and I will explain why. The author is gifted, creative, and intelligent. However, I did not really like many aspects of this series. This is my disclaimer, I have not ready anything by the literary influences named in the book description: Philip K Dick, Umberto Eco, and Haruki Murakami. It may be that this author is simply brilliant but I cannot appreciate him fully due to preferences in topic and writing style.Since I have few literary influences for the basis of this review, I will compare it to movies that I feel share some characteristics of this book. It was a mix of Alice in Wonderland, Pan's Labyrinth, 2010, Clockwork Orange, and Inception. It was like Alice in Wonderland in its winding dream-like state, Pan's Labyrinth in its twisted horror, 2010 in its spacey desolation, Clockwork Orange in its treatment of societal norms, and Inception in its multiple dream-like layers. These movies also share a questioning and distortion of reality.
The only reason I kept reading this book is that I had to know what was going to happen with the protagonist. The book is a mystery and, although reading on kindle blurs the lines between one book beginning and ending, I do not see how only one or two of these books can be read to any satisfaction.
In fact, the biggest criticism I have is that I feel this book could have been one book, longer than the first but shorter than the sum of all three.
The turn of the century sequences had a lot more action and were far more interesting. I found myself skimming through the "2010" chapters that rambled on just to get to the meatier storyline.
I am glad it is over, the ending was not as I expected, and I am not altogether sure it could not be considered a "Deus Ex Machina," an adventurous reader would need to determine that for themselves.
